Welcome! I am looking forward to starting an exciting year that I hope will be mutually beneficial. I have very high expectations of my students and will ask you to push yourself to the limits sometimes, but I would never ask you to do something that I wouldn’t do myself. I will be reading and writing alongside the students and we will be experiencing reader’s/ writer’s workshop together. Thinking outside of the box, questioning things, and respecting others are all vital components of this course.
Course Competencies: This course will address both the College and Career Readiness Standards found in the Common Core as well as the 9-10 English Language Arts Standards. For more information on the common core English standards, please visit http://www.corestandards.org/assets/CCSSI_ELA%20Standards.pdf
Here is a document with the standards written out in student-friendly language
Materials we may cover Throughout the year, we will be reading several novels, short stories, and poems to supplement the themes and ideas the students are exploring in World Dynamics. We will also occasionally watch all or parts of movies that highlight themes and ideas that go along with our discussions. A permission slip will be sent home for any movie or novel with mature content prior to it being covered in class. For your convenience, I have listed the novels that we are discussing covering this year. We will not read all of these novels, but this is to give you an idea of what we may cover so you can do research and ask any questions that you may need to.
This I Believe
Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson
Ishmael by Daniel Quinn
Animal Farm by George Orwell
Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury

The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brein

Your work will be graded on completion and/or accuracy.
Prep Work: Prep work is work that is assigned to ensure students are prepared for class. Prep work will only be accepted the day that it is due. Prep work may be graded for completion or simply used for class discussions/activities.

Papers/Projects: This course will be a reading and writing intensive course. Students will be expected to complete a writing portfolio in which the student will showcase their best work and show growth throughout the course. They will also be required to make a submission to the school literary and artwork anthology. Projects and papers will focus on concepts covered throughout the course and may be assigned individually or as group work. Students will be given time during class to complete each project or paper; however, time outside of school will also be required.
Online Components:
Class wikispace- Our class webpage will be the go-to place for students to get any information about the course. This webpage will be updated frequently with class handouts, notes, power points, agendas, project information, and more.
Engrade- Students will always be able to check the status of their grades online through Engrade
Google Docs- Students will turn in most of their assignments through google docs.
Classroom Conduct: Students are expected to follow all school rules and policies. In addition to the school rules, there are a few teacher-specific expectations of students:
Be Prompt- Be in your seat and ready to work on time. Seats will be assigned and you are expected to be in your assigned seats and ready to work when the period starts. Failure to do so will result in a "tardy."
Be Prepared- Bring all needed materials to class- Complete your assignments. You should ALWAYS have your laptop, independent reading book, Writer’s Notebook, and a writing utensil with you. Please take care of sharpening pencils before class begins. Please take care of personal issues during class changes and lunch. If you have a medical condition for which you might need special attention or consideration, please make me aware of it.
Be Polite- To the teacher- no talking when I am talking, raise your hand and wait to be called on.- To each other- no talking when another student is talking, no talking during assessments.- To property- be careful with classroom supplies, be mindful of other’s property, do not leave trash in my room, do not write on desks.
Be Proactive- If you have a problem with something, talk to the teacher about it before it gets worse.
Miscellaneous
NO FOOD or DRINK is allowed in the classroom. Bottled water is acceptable.
Only the teacher can dismiss the class. No one will be dismissed until all materials are returned and trash is thrown away. Do not pack up before you are asked to. Please remain in your seats until the class is dismissed.
Please keep your voice at an appropriate volume level.
Attendance/Tardies: A student is tardy when he or she is not in his or her seat ready to work at the designated time scheduled. The student is responsible for being aware of the time. The student should communicate with a teacher before going to another location, such as the bathroom or office, unless it is an emergency. Attendance will be taken daily; to be counted present, students must be in 90% of their class time. The attendance policy will follow Craven County’s policy.
Late and Make up Work For each day that an assignment is late (this includes Saturdays and Sundays), a student will receive a 10 pt reduction in their grade. When turning in work late, the work must be submitted at the time the class normally starts in order to count for that day. Students can be up to 5 days late before an assignment is no longer accepted. In the event of an absence, students have three school days from the date of the absence in order to get their missing work turned in. On the third day, the grade will begin to loose points according to the policy stated above. If the student knows that he or she will be out prior to the absence (field trip, doctor appointment, family vacation, etc), it is the student’s responsibility to find out what they are missing PRIOR to the absence.
